'The Alfen team is extremely excited to see the largest project in our partnership with SemperPower come to life as the largest battery energy storage system in the Netherlands. This project really shows how two Dutch companies work together and combine their expertise to develop innovative renewable energy systems.
Wärtsilä cited reports claiming that the Netherlands needs 29-54GW of energy storage by 2050 to achieve its renewable energy goals, including a 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. GIGA Buffalo, the largest battery energy storage system in the Netherlands, has been officially inaugurated after 10 months of construction.
Conducting the engineering and construction of the BESS is the multinational company, Equans Netherlands. Dutch energy player, Eneco, is tasked with tweaking the battery for optimal performance, enabling it to maintain the grid's balance without escalating local congestion.
SemperPower chief executive Dennis Schiricke said local system operators “have seen explosive growth in requests to connect battery energy storage systems to their grids”. “With this project we are continuing to respond to the challenges system operators are facing and accelerating the energy transition.”
Alfen said in a statement: “With large-scale battery energy storage systems like Project Pollux, it becomes possible to store renewable energy at times of abundance and release it again when the market demands it.”
