Powerchina has switched on a 100 MW solar tower in South Africa. The concentrated solar power (CSP) project will supply 480 GWh of clean energy to the country’s power grid each year. The system’s molten salt storage enables 12 hours of full-load operation. Powerchina said South Africa's 100 MW Redstone CSP plant has achieved grid connection.
Located in the town of De Aar in South Africa's Northern Cape Province, the project will have a total installed capacity of 342 megawatts, making it the largest single-unit solar power plant in South Africa. It will supply clean energy to large data centers and other commercial and industrial users across the country.
Chinese ambassador to South Africa Chen Xiaodong has offered to provide the South African grid with 66GW of solar infrastructure, to help the country stabilise its energy grid. Chen made the announcement during the China-South Africa New Energy Investment and Cooperation Conference held in Sandton, northern Johannesburg.
POWERCHINA has also been engaged in the construction of various green energy projects in the country. The 100MW Redstone concentrated solar thermal power plant is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa and is the country's largest of its kind.
The ambassador also noted that China would provide both materials and machinery and skilled workers to aid in the development of South Africa’s energy grid, which has struggled to meet electricity demand under state-operated energy utility Eskom, prompting interest in forms of power generation such as solar.
The $342 million project will be South Africa's most extensive single-unit solar installation, positioned to meet high industrial energy demands and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy. Once operational, the project may further encourage regional partnerships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supporting South Africa’s environmental targets.
The global residential solar storage and inverter market is experiencing rapid expansion, with demand increasing by over 300% in the past three years. Home energy storage solutions now account for approximately 35% of all new residential solar installations worldwide. North America leads with 38% market share, driven by homeowner energy independence goals and federal tax credits that reduce total system costs by 26-30%.
